The 2018 Seminar on Meteorological disaster relief for Developing Countries was Held in NUIST

On the afternoon of April 8th, the opening ceremony of Seminar on Meteorological disaster relief for Developing Countries has been successfully held in Nanjing University of Information Science Technology. The Seminar was organized by the Ministry of Commerce and hosted by the World Meteorological Organization Nanjing Regional Training Center. Prof. Liu Xuanfei, vice-president, NUIST, and Ms. Zhao Yuhong, Deputy Director of Foreign Affairs Department of Jiangsu Provincial Department of Commerce, attended the ceremony and delivered speeches. Fifteen students from five countries attend the Seminar. The ceremony was presided over by Mr. Ma Tinghuai,  Executive Deputy Director of the WMO Nanjing Regional Training Center.

 Firstly, Vice President LIU Xuanfei expressed warm welcome to the participants and thanks MINISTRY OF COMMERCE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA for its long-term support to our school. He said that in recent decades, natural disasters such as thunderstorms, typhoons, hurricanes, snowstorms, and landslides, mudslides, storm surges, and atmospheric pollution have caused greater impact on people's lives and economic activities. Therefore, it is important for meteorological agencies in various countries to explore effective prevention strategies, provide early warning of meteorological disasters, and carry out professional and effective rescue work. The seminar will cover such topics as the monitoring and early warning of major meteorological disasters, the application of meteorological satellites and Doppler weather radars, meteorological disaster mechanisms, disaster prediction, and analytical rescue techniques. I hope that I can share my expertise in preventing natural disasters with fellow students. And experience to improve the timeliness and effectiveness of our disaster reduction work and better meet various challenges. We hope the participants can share with each other the expertise and experience in preventing natural disasters so as to improve the timeliness and effectiveness of our disaster reduction efforts and better respond to various challenges.

On behalf of the Provincial    hard work of WMO Regional Training Center staffs. She said, Foreign aid training is one of assistance that Chinese government providing for other developing countries. WMO RTC Nanjing, as a Chinese foreign aid training institution, has made positive contributions to the improvement of the operational capacity of meteorological practitioners in Asian and African developing countries, as well as the learning of new knowledge and new technologies. The Chinese government hopes to strengthen cooperation with other countries and work together to prevent and mitigate disasters through the Seminar.

On behalf of participants, Ms. VICTORIA APIOU from South Sudan expressed thanks to MINISTRY OF COMMERCE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA, NUIST and the WMO Regional Training Centre Nanjing for holding this seminar. She said that climate disasters have caused tremendous losses and disasters to people's lives and property. And she hopes that through this seminar, she can learn from China’s experience and work hard to resolve domestic problems.
