2018 Seminar on Meteorological Forecasts for Countries along the Belt and Road successfully closed in NUIST

On the afternoon of June 13th, the Ministry of Commerce-sponsored and the World Meteorological Organization Nanjing Regional Training Center-Organized 2018 Seminar on Meteorological Forecasts for Countries along the Belt and Road successfully closed in NUIST. Prof. Liu Xuanfei, vice-president, NUIST, and Ms. Zhao Yuhong, Deputy Director of Foreign Affairs Department of Jiangsu Provincial Department of Commerce, attended the ceremony and delivered speeches. Fourteen students from five countries including south Sudan, Nepal, Azerbaijan, Cuba and Ukraine attended the closing ceremony. The ceremony was presided over by  Professor Ma Tinghuai, Executive Deputy Director of the WMO Nanjing Regional Training Center.

Prof. Liu Xuanfei, vice-president, thanked the Ministry of Commerce and the Department of Commerce of Jiangsu Province for the long-term trust on and support. He gave full recognition to the active cooperation and support of each student during the seminar and congratulated the 14 students on their successful completion of the seminar. He points out that the 3-week seminar rich in content and effective, and contains not only basic theory and knowledge on weather forecasting, but also to teach the application of atmospheric sounding instruments in weather forecast, and connecting with the latest trend in meteorological service – smart meteorology taught the latest progress of meteorological service. As a Chinese saying goes, “experience is the best teacher". The seminar also included visits to NUIST Atmospheric Detection Center, Nanjing Meteorological Service and that of Hubei Province, and some local tourist attractions as well at the same time, which incorporating theory and practice deeply. Finally, President Liu sent a sincere invitation to the students, hope they can come to China, to NUIST again!

On behalf of the Provincial Department of Commerce, Deputy Director Zhao Yuhong appreciated the WMO Regional Training Centre staff for their hard work. She said, Foreign aid training is one of assistance that Chinese government providing for other developing countries. WMO RTC Nanjing, as a Chinese foreign aid training institution, contributed to improve professional competence of meteorological employees from developing countries in Asia and Africa. The Chinese government also hopes to strengthen cooperation with other countries through training and work together to prevent and mitigate disasters.

Ms. Sajeena Shakya Meteorologist, a representative from Nepal, expressed her heartfelt thanks to the Ministry of Commerce, NUIST and the WMO Nanjing Regional Training Centre for offering a good learning environment, a comfortable living environment and help. In her statement, she noted that the seminar had improved her knowledge of weather forecasts and climate prediction techniques. Students used their leisure time to visit Nanjing’s famous scenic spots and historic sites and appreciate the long history of China and the profound Chinese culture. She hopes to be a messenger of goodwill for China and the Chinese people. In the end, she said fondly, the 21 days in China will be unforgettable even though time flies.
