Seminar on Early Warning of Meteorological Disasters in Developing Countries Closed successfully

On the afternoon of April 25, the closing ceremony of Seminar on Early Warning of Meteorological Disasters in Developing Countries has been successfully held in Nanjing University of Information Science Technology. The Seminar was organized by the Ministry of Commerce and hosted by the World Meteorological Organization Nanjing Regional Training Center. Professor Jiang Jianqing, President of Nanjing University of Information Science Technology, Director of WMO Nanjing Regional Training Center, and Ms. Zhao Yuhong, Deputy Director of Foreign Affairs Department of Jiangsu Provincial Department of Commerce, attended the ceremony and delivered speeches. The ceremony was presided over by Professor Lei Zhaogong, Deputy Director of the WMO Nanjing Regional Training Center.

Professor Jiang Jianqing, President of Nanjing University of Information Science Technology, Director of WMO Nanjing Regional Training Center, gave his congratulation to the participants on their successful completion and thanked the Ministry of Commerce and the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Commerce for their long-standing trust and support to the school and Regional Training Center. He stressed that the meteorological disasters caused great harm to the society and economy. According to the statistics from the United Nations Department of Disaster Reduction, the annual economic lost caused by meteorological disasters has accounted for 3% to 6% of global gross national product. Therefore, it’s important for all countries, especially developing countries, to master the relevant early warning technology of meteorological disasters. He said that the three-week seminar not only introduced meteorological disasters and the basic knowledge of their early warning in the context of climate change, but also included the technical means and platforms of early warning for various meteorological disasters, such as numerical model, weather radar, meteorological satellite and its applications, early warning of agricultural meteorological disasters and China's multi-hazard early warning system.

Ms. Zhao Yuhong, Deputy Director of Jiangsu Provincial Department of Commerce Department of Foreign Affairs, on behalf of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Commerce warmly congratulated the participants on their completion. She said that the WMO Nanjing  Regional Training Center, as China's foreign aid training institutions, has made positive contributions to the improvement of the operational capacity and the study of the new knowledge and new technologies for meteorological practitioners in developing countries of Asia and Africa. In addition to learning professional knowledge and skills, she also wished that the participants could learn more about China, to be the friendship"ambassadors" of Chinese and their countries to promote the economy and trade relationship between China and these countries.

The participants representative Anderson BANDA from Zambia thanked the Chinese Government and the Nanjing Regional Training Center of Nanjing University of Information Science Technology for organizing the training course. He said that through the training, the participants not only learned the knowledge and technology about early warning of meteorological disasters, , but also shared the experience of their countries. The Center also organized visits to the Shanghai Meteorological Service and relevant enterprises, which helped to improve the operational level of meteorological disaster prevention and mitigation in developing countries.

At the end of the ceremony, Persident Jiang Jianqing and Deputy Director Zhao Yuhong issued the certificates to the participants. It is reported that the training course started from the April 5, and the curriculum is very scientific and practical, fitting the personnel training needs of recipient countries, received high praise from the participants.
